Social Explorer variables usually originate from Census datasets.
Our variables are often computed from two or more Census variables.
The following is a disclosure of our variable sources. Everything from the
data source to the exact formula used to compute the variable is displayed.
This document is generated automatically by a computer program that parses SAS code
used to process the datasets, so there is no human intervention and no chance for typos or stale infomation to be presented.
By looking at this document you can tell exactly what we did with the data to
come up with the numbers being presented.
EXAMPLE:
Persons In group quarters Data Source: Census 1990, SF3 Variable: P0170x19: Persons In group quarters Formula: P0170x19 = P0170013 + P0170014;

Data Source:
Data sources are disclosed in the first line labeled Data Source:. This will tell you which dataset the
variables came from. For example, it may say "Census 1990, SF3". This means data for this Social Explorer variable came from
1990 Census, Summary File 3. For more information about Summary Files and different datasets released by the Census Bureau, please visit http://factfinder.census.gov, and http://factfinder.census.gov/jsp/saff/SAFFInfo.jsp?_pageId=sp4_decennial
Variable name:
The Social Explorer variable is named and labeled here. In this example,
"Variable: P0170x19: Persons in Group Quarters".
Formula: P0170x19 = P0170013 + P0170014;
This is the equation used to compute the Social Explorer variable P0170x19.
The variables on the right side of the Formula, "P0170013 + P0170014;" are
original variables from the data source, in this example Census 1990 SF3.
The variable on the left side, "P0170x19" is the Social Explorer variable being computed,
and that is the variable you see in the data we present.
We also display information about each Census variable used in the fomula in the table right bellow, that way you don't have to
look far for documentation to interpret the fomula. In this example we added variable P0170013 (In group quarters: Institutionalized persons)
and P0170014 (In group quarters: Other persons in group quarters).
Variable Names
Variable names are not arbitrarily chosen. The first set of numbers represents the Table Number within the Data Source,
and the last three digits represent the Variable Number within the table. In the example above, P0170013, the first three numbers
after P0 170 represent the Census table number and last three are the variable number within the table.
This variable came from Table 170, variable number 13.
Other examples of variable names:
Census variable PC105055 comes from table 105, variable number 55.
Sometimes numbers are separatered by an underscore as in this example:
Census variable T005_024 comes from Table 5, variable 24.
Suppression:
Suppression is a technique used by the Census Buerou in the past to hide certain data
that would make it possible for individuals to be identified. This only affects areas with very small population
counts, and was used only for Census years 1960, 1970 and 1980.
Social Explorer marks all values that were suppressed with a symbol and a link
that breaks down exactly what and how much was suppressed. For 1970 and 1980 it was a very difficult task to
preserve suppression information and keep track of suppression percentages for geographies that are split by
other geographies and you essentially get Partial Suppression which is why we sometimes report that a certain percent of
the data was suppressed but not the entire value. We also use allocation to fill in suppression if a small percentage
of data were suppressed. You can read more details about the topic of suppression in documents listed bellow.
In 1990 and 2000, a new technique was used by the Census Buerou that made it possible to
avoid suppressing data and at the same time protect individual identity of subjects.
Suppression is difficult to deal with because it causes things not to add up properly because
some numbers are hidden so tables don't add up to totals as they are supposed to.
